Workshop on Doubt

On June 25-26, 2026 a workshop on doubt will take place in Berlin, at Human Abilities, Centre for Advanced Studies in the Humanities, Schönhauser Allee 10/11, 4th floor.

Call for Abstracts for Wittgenstein Workshop

Workshop “Wittgenstein on Epistemic Practice: Ignorance, Hinges and Skepticism.”

Dates: March 9-10, 2026.

Location: Hanse-Wissenschaftskolleg Institute for Advanced Study, Delmenhorst, Germany.

Organizers: Hans-Johann Glock (University of Zurich), Tammo Lossau, (University of Bremen), Mark Siebel (University of Oldenburg), and Norman Sieroka (University of Bremen).

Keynote Speakers: Hans-Johann Glock (University of Zurich) and Michael Williams (Johns Hopkins University).

Aside from an interest in linguistic practice, Wittgenstein also (primarily in On Certainty) shows an interest in our epistemic practice. His idea that our practice of doubting requires us to rely on “hinges” has gained significant prominence in recent discussions, but many of his other observations on skepticism and the idea of ignorance also allow for a range of interesting applications. Based on a close and attentive reading of Wittgenstein’s works, this workshop aims to make progress on understanding our epistemic practice and the issues surrounding it.

Presentations can be on any topic connected to Wittgenstein’s late epistemology and could include exegetical questions as well as topics from hinge epistemology or applications of Wittgenstein’s ideas to issues like conspiracy theories, echo chambers or the epistemology of democratic processes.

This is a call for the submission of short abstracts (ca. 500-800 words) of those interested in presenting a talk at the workshop. These abstracts should be anonymized for review, but authors should disclose their name and affiliation in the e-mail. Presentations should be ca. 30 minutes long, as each slot will be 60 min. in total. Abstracts should be sent to lossau1@uni-bremen.de by October 1, 2025. Organizers aim to notify accepted speakers by November 1, 2025. They are currently trying to acquire funding that will provide (limited) support for travel costs, but cannot guarantee such support at this point.

Skepticism and Social Epistemology

A workshop entitled “Skepticism and Social Epistemology” will take place at the Department of Philosophy at the University of Haifa on Monday, April ‎‎8, 2019.

Although skepticism is a central theme in epistemology, skepticism is rarely dealt with in ‎social epistemology. A rarely challenged assumption in the epistemology of testimony is ‎that subjects normally acquire knowledge and justified belief from the testimony of ‎others. However, even if we can gain knowledge from non-testimonial sources, such as ‎perception and inference, there might be special reasons why we cannot get knowledge or ‎justified belief from testimony. Our increasing reliance on technologically and ‎algorithmically mediated testimonies and phenomena such as fake news may also cast ‎doubts on our possibility of getting testimonial knowledge in general or specific cases. ‎The workshop talks address these issues. 

The speakers will be Arnon Keren, Aviv Barnoy, Boaz Miller, Bryan Frances, Maya Roman, Ori Freiman, and Sandy Goldberg.

Suspension of Belief

On October, 26–27, the University of Mannheim will host the workshop “Suspension of Belief”. Here's the workshop's presentation:

We often suspend belief. Some questions we haven’t considered yet, others are still under investigation, and yet others seem to allow for no definite answer. We often withhold belief and, more importantly, we do so rationally. Despite its core role in our doxastic everyday life, suspension of belief has not received much attention in the epistemological literature, which has mainly focused on positive belief alone. The workshop will fill this lacuna and investigate the nature and rational profile of suspension of belief.
